The labeled five

Modeled on the Q1 Artificial Intelligence list at listofjournals.com, here is what our directory records under the AI labels themselves. Just five journals carry a subfield of Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning, and every one of them sits in Q1.

JournalRecorded subfieldRecorded metric
Nature Machine IntelligenceMachine LearningImpact factor 23.9
Artificial IntelligenceArtificial IntelligenceImpact factor 4.6
Journal of Artificial Intelligence ResearchArtificial IntelligenceImpact factor 4.0
Journal of Machine Learning ResearchMachine LearningSJR 1.997
Machine LearningMachine LearningSJR 1.027

Two of the five report SJR rather than an impact factor in our record, which is why the table prints the metric it has instead of inventing a conversion.

The adjacent shelf: thirteen in total

AI work also publishes under neighboring labels. Adding Neural Networks (2), Data Mining (3), Computer Vision (2) and Intelligent Systems (1) takes the shelf to 13 journals, again all Q1: IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (20.4) heads it, followed by IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems (9.7), the International Journal of Computer Vision (9.3), ACM Transactions on Knowledge Discovery from Data (6.9), ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology (6.6), Neural Networks (6.3), Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery (4.3) and Knowledge and Information Systems (3.1).

Why the shelf is thin

Thirteen Q1 journals sounds small for the loudest field in science, until the other side of the directory is counted: our records hold 131 computer science conferences, and the AI community's center of gravity sits there (the A* tier alone holds 56 venues). The journal shelf is thin because the field routes its prestige through conferences first and journals second. Authors who need a Q1 journal home have 13 recorded options here; authors who can publish at conferences have a far deeper bench, which our odds checker counts venue by venue.
